Why Gaya Ji is Considered the Holiest Tirtha for the Liberation of Ancestors
According to the Hindu calendar, the sixteen days from Bhadrapada Purnima to Ashwin Amavasya are known as Pitru Paksha (the fortnight of Shradh). It is believed that during these days our ancestors descend from Pitru Lok to earth and look to their descendants to perform Shradh, Tarpan and Pind Daan.
Shradh Karma performed during Pitru Paksha is believed, according to the scriptures, to satisfy ancestors and bring happiness, prosperity, the wellbeing of children and good health to the family. The exact dates of Pitru Paksha shift each year according to the Panchang - please contact us by phone or WhatsApp for the correct dates for the current year.
According to legend, Lord Vishnu granted a boon to the immensely pious demon Gayasur: that anyone who performed Shradh Karma and Pind Daan on this land - his very body, Gaya - would surely secure moksha for their ancestors. This is why Gaya Ji is considered the holiest "Moksha-Bhoomi" on earth, and Pind Daan performed here is regarded as more fruitful than at any other pilgrimage site.
The footprint of Lord Vishnu at the Vishnupad Temple, the sacred bank of the Falgu river, and the nearby Akshaya Vat tree - these three are the principal sites of Gaya Shradh. The Falgu river is regarded as a tirtha even where its waters run low, and Pind Daan performed beneath the Akshaya Vat is believed to yield "Akshaya" - imperishable - results.
Pind Daan can be performed on any day of the year, though the sixteen days of Pitru Paksha carry special significance, and Gaya Ji sees a larger number of Yajmans during this period as a result. If you prefer to perform the rite in a more peaceful setting, coming in any other month is equally valid according to scripture.
